Jonathan Marz counsels and represents public agency and private clients in matters involving water rights and related environmental issues. He provides legal and regulatory guidance regarding California’s water rights laws, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act, among other laws and regulations.

  • Jonathan possesses significant litigation experience, having litigated countless cases from start to finish and achieving favorable outcomes for his clients in court, arbitrations, and mediations. He is adept in all stages and aspects of litigation, including formulating litigation and trial strategy; preparing, filing, and responding to lawsuits; discovery, including taking and defending depositions, and managing large-scale electronic discovery; motion practice; negotiating with opposing counsel and sophisticated entities; working with experts; and bench and jury trial experience.

    ​As an attorney who worked in both private practice and in-house, Jonathan is regarded for his ability to understand legal issues (“What does the law say?”) just as well as the business concerns (“What should we do?”). Jonathan’s clients appreciate his analytical and creative thinking; exercise of good judgment; relationship building skills; and ability to engage in useful problem solving with key decision makers, all while managing critical timelines.

  • Jonathan earned his A.B. in Political Science and History (double major) from University of California, Davis, and his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law.

  • Jonathan is a member of the California State Bar and the Sacramento County Bar Association.

    Jonathan is also active in civic and charitable organizations. He is a former member of the Rotary Club of Sacramento, for which he was an elected Director from July 2018-July 2020. Jonathan served as an elected Director for GRID Alternatives North Valley from 2016-2022, and elected Board President from 2018-2022.
